MTX and mood swings Options

hello!
went back on mtx when our baby was about 6 months old and have been having awful mood swings since then. when i've googled this there are a few sites where people have experienced the same thing but its not mentioned in the drug info leaflets/sites. just wondering if anyone has experienced this too? i know when i mention it to my rheumy they'll say its because i've got a baby etc etc but i was fine before i started back on it.......

Hi Katie, cant say I know much about it, only diagnosed last July. Been on mtx since then, had various side effects, but not mood swings. Hopefully someone will have answers for you. Sorry this is a problem for you, it must be very hard with taking care of a 6 month old too. Look after yourself. (if its any consolation I work as a nanny/childminder, so know what its like to care for little ones!)Smile

hi Katie,

Yes, mtx can cause mood swings! I had this when I first started on it and my rheumy nurse at the time said it was a common side effect of mtx.
It only lasted about 6 months for me, so hope it settles down for you soon.

Hi Katie,

Sorry about the mood swings but it must be hard coping with a baby and RA. I only started on MTX 5 weeks ago so unable to answer your question. I definately get mood swings, but believe this is because I'm going through the change, although my husband would say I've had them ever since he's known me. Make sure you speak to your GP before to long if the problem doesn't get better don't wait to long.

saw rhuemy nurse on thurs and they're dropping mtx down to 15mg as she said mood swings can be a sign of toxicity, also taking more folic acid - so lets see what happens! in some ways i think having a baby is helping me cope better with ra as i just have to get on with things and try and turn a bad day into a manageable day, although i'm sure i'll just collapse and sleep for about a week somepoint soon!! LOL
